I am directed by the Local Government Board

to advert to your letter of the 25th ultimo, with

enclosure, respecting the value of carbolic acid as a

disinfectant, and, in forwarding the accompanying copy

of a General Memorandum on the proceedings which are

advisable in places attacked or threatened by epidemio

that since, as the result of experiments, the Board

have found that the phenol series of disinfectants

are bulk for bulk inferior to perchloride of mercury,
